How to Get Rid of Pimple Scars in 7 Natural Ways

How to Get Rid of Pimple Scars

As you may very well know, a pimple is nothing more than an inflamed hair follicle. And where there’s inflammation, there’s swelling.

When you get a pimple, the pore swells and breaks the wall of the follicle. With a break deep enough, it could affect the so called dermal layer of the skin.

Very simply put, the dermal layer protects the body from stress and strain. It’s a part of the body, that holds hair follicles and sweat glands.

As a break occurs in the dermal layer, your body will try to repair it by producing collagen. And while we all appreciate our body’s effort, the result isn’t always exactly satisfactory.

If you’re unlucky, you might end up with pimple scars.

Dark Spots

The reason for dark spots is also due to your body’s attempt at being a hero. When it detects the inflammation in the follicle, your body releases way, way too much melanin.

Melanin is a pigment, which gives your skin its color and also decides the color of your eyes.

More melanin means darker skin. And if your body releases too much melanin in relation to your skin color, you’ll end up with dark spots.

Learn How to Get Rid of Pimple Scars & Dark Spots

People spend way too much money on creams and treatments that don’t work. And I can’t blame them. I’ve done the same.

The reason for throwing so much money at these products is often due to desperation, and a feeling of hopelessness. If you and I are anything alike, you’d do close to anything to get rid of your acne.

And once you manage to get rid of those pesky red and white bumps in your face, another problem might arise. The scars… the spots.

Would that mean you’d have to spend even more money, to get rid of those too? Luckily, NO!

Below are 7 of the best home remedies for battling acne scars.

They are extremely cheap and easy to make!

Recipe 1: Olive Oil Scrub

Despite what many seem to think, olive oil is actually quite healthy for your skin. Not only does it smell amazing (love the smell!), but it also has skin healing properties.

Besides, it’s incredibly cheap and available at almost every grocery shop you can find, so testing this recipe should be extremely easy!

  1. Just mix 1 tablespoon of olive oil, and 1 tablespoon of sugar.
  2. Scrub your face.
  3. Rinse it off.

It’s recommended that you do this 2-3 times a week.

Not only will it help with your acne, but the overall facial texture will improve as well. Awesome!

Recipe 2: Lemon Juice

The lemon juice recipe is a perfect solution for your dark spots. The reason for this is that lemon is LOADED with Vitamin C, which is an anti-oxidant that is effective against hyper pigmentation. Simply said, lemon is a bleaching agent for your skin.

  1. Mix 1/2 water and 1/2 lemon juice.
  2. Dab the solution on your dark spots and leave it on for about 10 minutes.
  3. Wash your face.

Because lemon is acidic, it’s very important that you apply moisturizer to your face when you’re finished. This helps to re-stabilize the pH in your skin.

Repeat this procedure about 2-3 times per week.

Recipe 3: Aloe Vera & Lemon Juice Cream

There are so many uses for aloe vera and I could almost say it’s one of my favorite things in the whole world.

In fact, I may dedicate an entire post to it in the future, because it has a huge amount of beneficial properties.

There are too many benefits to cover in this post, but a few cool things about aloe vera is:

  • It heals wounds
  • It’s Anti-Inflammatory
  • It’s Anti-Cancer
  • It reduces diabetes symptoms
  • It’s Antimicrobial
  • It improves skin health

And the last one in the list is why you should use it for your pimple scars and spots. Aloe vera actually reduces redness of the skin.

So, do the following.

  1. 1 tbsp of aloe vera gel
  2. 3 drops of lemon juice
  3. Mix the ingredients together and carefully massage it onto your face.
  4. Leave the cream on for about 30 minutes.
  5. Rinse.
  6. Apply a good moisturizer to your face.

The reason for the moisturizer is the same as the recipe above. The solution contains lemon juice, which can cause dry skin. And a dry skin is an unhealthy skin.

Cucumber Slices

Recipe 4: Cucumber Slices

You know how people tend to put cucumber slices on their eyes to get rid of their dark circles? The idea behind using cucumbers against acne scars is fundamentally the same.

  1. Take a chilled cucumber and make 7-8 slices and them put them on your face.
  2. Leave them there for 30 minutes.
  3. Rinse with water.
  4. Apply quality moisturizer.
  5. Repeat 3-4 times a week.

Yes, it will look embarrassingly hilarious, but don’t get discouraged because of it. It’s good for your skin.

Cucumber contains the skin-friendly Vitamin C and caffeic acid. It’s also made of 96% water, and placing it onto your skin will help keep it hydrated.

Recipe 5: Apple Cider Vinegar

This recipe is one of the easiest to make. And it contains only two ingredients:

  • 50% Apple Cider Vinegar
  • 50% Water

Mix them together and pour the solution on a cotton pad or ball. Dab the affected areas and leave it on for around 10-15 minutes. Then rinse.

Apply some moisturizer afterwards, to keep your skin nice and fresh.

Egg Whites

Recipe 6: Egg Whites (Caution!)

Note: Allergic to eggs? – DO NOT TRY THIS ONE!

Eggs are fantastic when it comes to removing dead skin cells and void the bacteria that cause acne.

Furthermore, egg whites contain a protein which helps speed up the healing process of your skin; making your scars heal a bit faster.

  1. Just crack an egg and separate the white from the yolk.
  2. Apply the egg white to your skin and leave it on until it fully dries.
  3. Wash it off with water.
  4. Repeat this process 2-3 times per week.

Your skin will look way better in no-time!

Ice Crystal

Recipe 7: Ice, Ice, Baby

Frozen water. How could that possibly be helpful for getting rid of pimple scars?

Actually, it’s not so much the water itself, but the cold.

Using a cold ice cube in your face reduces both scar redness and bleaches dark spots. All you have to do is put it in a clean cloth and carefully dab the affected areas.

The tedious part about this “recipe”, is that it has to be done every day for at least 2 weeks. Preferably longer.

Give it a Shot!

As you can see, it doesn’t have to cost a fortune to get rid of pimple scars and pigmented spots caused by acne. And there’s no need for chemicals to get involved either.

If you are persistent with using these natural recipes, your skin will look a lot better and contain less scarring.

And it wouldn’t have ruined you in the process.

That’s a win-win in my book!

Obviously, everybody’s skin is different and there’s no guarantee that it will work on your skin type.

But it could at least be worth a shot, when a healthier skin is the reward.

Good luck!

Have you tried any of the recipes? How did it work for you? How long did you use it? Let me know below!

  1. Thanks so much for the description of the process. I never thought of pimples as body reaction trying to be a hero, healing and protecting our skin. I get dark spots that are so annoying. I really like that you are recommending remedies that are easy to make and are so affordable. The other day just by coincidence I was washing my hair with a little bit of apple cider vinegar and I used some for my face and it was amazing! It was like a nice tonic solution for my oily skin. I’m going to try the sugar with the olive oil to exfoliate. Do you know if I can use coconut oil as well? Thanks so much for sharing these great tips 🙂

    1. Hello Thais,

I’m glad that you liked this post. Hopefully the exfoliate will work for you!

However, I would not use coconut oil. It’s considered being a comedogenic, which means that it’ll clog your pores. Since it’s so fat, your skin will have troubles absorbing it, and it’ll instead lay on top of the pores and eventually clog them.

Hope you’ll have a great day!

  2. Great checklist! I like the way you implemented funny but fact ideas that kept me read between all the lines… In your checklist I would have gone for the limon juice, because it is available in every place you go at almost no cost.. Otherwise important staff for all those who struggle with pimples!.

    1. Thank you, Abdirashid!

Yes, the lemon seems to be the most popular item on this list, without a doubt. And for good reason! Like you say, it’s cheap and easily available for everybody.

      Have a nice day!

  3. You know what, my husband’s face is exactly like that first picture up there. He had all these scars since his teenage years, when the pimples were relentless.

I’m going to get him to try the olive oil scrub. Apple cider vinegar sounds simple enough too, I have plenty of that at home. Hope at least some of these can work! Thanks for all these great remedies.

    1. Hi Joo!

The deep scarring is quite a hassle to get rid of completely. Ultimately they’re irregularities in the skin’s topology, and depending on how severe these are, your skin may need to be put under care of a dermatologist.

It’s definitely worth a try, and if it’s not deep enough he may see a difference in his scarring. Olive oil scrub and apple cider vinegar can do wonders for your skin, but be prepared that you may need to seek professional assistance if it doesn’t work.

Thanks for getting in touch! All the best to you and your husband!

  4. Nice Article, I never knew that there were so many natural remedies for this issue. My favorite has got to be the Apple Cider Vinegar. Not only is it good for your face but its also good for overall gut health. I have a friend who has a lot of pimple scars, I will share this article with him

    1. Hey Marvin,

      Thanks for your kind words.

I had no idea about the gut related benefits of apple cider vinegar! I’m gonna have to do some research, it seems.

Your friend is so welcome. I appreciate you spreading the word.

      Thanks for stopping by!

  5. Hi Mike – thanks for sharing this useful article. My daughter suffers from acne and has some unsightly scars, so I was interested to learn how she could get rid of them in a natural way. I like the fact that all your remedies can be made from products we already have in the home. I will share this article with her and hopefully, get her started on one of them tonight. All the best, Diane

    1. Hi Diane!

I’m sorry to hear about your daughter. Acne can be such a stubborn disease sometimes, so I really hope that some of these remedies can help her.

Indeed, most of the ingredients needed are often found in your everyday household! I really like when you can just try something you find online, and if it doesn’t work just move on to the next thing.

Looking forward to having your daughter take part of the information on this site! If she’s having any questions, she can just send me a message and I’ll try to help her out.

      Have a good one, Diane!

  6. Hello Mike –

Where were you and your site as I was raising my seven children?  I cannot tell you how many times we tried to comfort our teenagers and the many trips to the pharmacy for any and all potions that would hopefully alleviate the stress my kids were experiencing.

This piece is so informative and easy to read and understand.  It appears my grandchildren will avoid the many horrs of facial blemishes that their parents endured.

I like the layout and clarity of your site – easy to read and explore.

    Thanks – Mike

    1. Hey Mike (excellent name you have there, I must say),

I salute you. Raising one child can be challenging enough, so I can only imagine how it would be with seven! And all with pesky acne, too!

Yes, natural acne remedies are definitely a good thing to try before spending time and money on visiting the pharmacy. Most of these remedies are actually quite cheap, and it doesn’t take much of your time to try them out. And if you’d happen to find one that works – oh, boy, the money you could save!

I appreciate your kind words. I’m working hard to make the experience on this site as pleasant as possible (haha).

      Take care!

  7. How lucky am I to across this post, personally I am a victim of this pimples and they really make me feel depressed, sometimes shy and also stressing my life, I have tried several remedies but still in vain as they still Pop out, as I was reading this post I have learnt something new, it’s about the cucumber, I never had this before and as Uma results I have not yet tried it, I am sure to give it a trial soon, thank you for the well detailed information on how to get rid of pimoltand black spots, I will try out the whole process and maybe give feedback about it,thank you.

    From Joy.

    1. Hi Joy,

I’m glad you found the information useful. Hopefully some of it will help you and your acne scars.

About the cucumber; it’s mostly a matter of hydration and giving your skin a chance to rebuild moisture to speed up healing. Basically, it’s a natural moisturizer packed with vitamin C!

Looking forward to your feedback. It would be interesting to see your results!

      Thanks for the visit!

  8. Excellent article, full of interesting and natural ways to handle this condition.

I have only three acne scars on my lower left cheek, and my mother tells me they are from Chicken Pox when I was younger. I’m wondering if these solutions would also work on spot scars that were caused by Pox instead of your typical acne?

    1. Hey Chris,

It sounds to me that your Pox scars are a few years old, so you’d probably be better off looking for alternatives to the natural remedies. Depending on how deep your scars are, exfoliating could work. Otherwise you’d probably need to see a dermatologist, unfortunately.

      Thanks for stopping by!

  9. Hi Mike,

Thanks for the tips to remove pimple scars. They seem simple enough. I would love to have an idea of how long it will take to see results so that a person would know if the method is working. Are these same tips useful for preventing pimples? Thanks again for sharing.

    I wish you the best.

    1. Hello Olufemi!

You’re very welcome. Glad to have you here!

Regarding using these tips for pimples: Some of them may work, like aloe vera and lemon.

However, I recommend that you check out my article about acne treatment at home instead. It’s packed with lots of goodies for getting rid of acne specifically.

      Have a good one!

  10. Thanks for the tips. These are very helpful and I will try some of them. Cucumber slices are good for many things but I think that I have to try the Olive Oil Scrub and the Aloe Vera & Lemon Juice Cream too.

Olive Oil is very good for many things. I also used it to make my hair healthier after my treatment. Aloe Vera is also one of the plants that I also use for many things. These will probably very good for this too.

    1. Hello!

Like you say, aloe vera is one of those plants you can use for more or less anything. I’m still in the process of planning to write an article dedicated to aloe, but I’m not really sure yet what I want it to address. There are so much to say about it, because it’s simply just a wonderful natural overall health component.

I didn’t know olive oil could be used for the hair as well. Did your hair get shinier, or what did the oil do to it? Please, do tell!

      Thanks for visiting!

  11. Great post and good info.

This can really help me since I have acne for quite a while and of course, doctor Google doesn’t help me too much, only giving bad info.

I will try the oil, since my skin isn’t so fat, and knowing that brings a bit more, which I think that is my problem.

My wife has the opposite, she has a fat skin and this causes these problems.

I will show her this post, since I think it has a cure for her as well.

    Thanks a lot!

    1. Hey Emmanuel,

The general “rule” when it comes to skin types is to use lighter products for oily or combination skin (like water based). Using oil based is usually fine for normal and definitely recommended for dry skin.

You mention that your wife has fat skin (I guess you mean oily?). It’s very common for people to think something in the lines of “Oh, I’ve got oily skin, so I better dry it out”, which ends up making them use very harsh products with, say, alcohol in them.

The thing is, when using alcohol, you tend to dry the skin too much. This triggers your skin’s sebum production (in an attempt to hydrate the skin again), which could make the whole situation worse.

Using water based products is therefore highly recommended.

      Thanks for stopping by!

  12. I’ve been suffering from pimples since I was a teenager. I learned in elementary biology class that it is as a result of puberty and that it will go away with time. I am over 30 now and still have to contend with the embarrassment it brings. In a bid to remove them, I squeeze them with my fingers. The end result is dark spots. I have tried a number of skincare products and none seem to give lasting solutions. It is amazing that simple everyday items like lemon and cucumber can actually bring some relief. I have a lemon tree at my backyard and want to give it a try. Do you think it is safe to apply lemon juice on a broken skin area?

    1. Hello and welcome!

By having adult acne, you’re in great company on this website! I know exactly how it is. I’m currently 31 and still battling those pesky pimples. But I’m finding ways that work for me, and with a bit of patience, you can too!

I never recommend popping your pimples. Never! By popping, you make the wound a lot bigger than it has to be.

If you feel like draining your pimple, you can do it by grazing it, just a little, from the side with a sterilized needle and let the pus find its way out on its own.

Are you asking whether it’s safe to use lemon on an open wound? Well, I wouldn’t.

Lemons are anti-bacterial, so I don’t think there would be any risk of infection (I’m not doctor, so don’t quote me on this).

But it would hurt, a lot. Don’t do it. (You can quote me on this, though)

Thanks for the visit. Have a nice day!

  13. Many useful tips on how to get rid of a pimple scar and also recipes that are easily prepared right in the home from ingredients that most of us have readily available. I loved this post. As I am an old man, it is less for the help it provides for scarring (at this age I am not going to impress anyone no matter what I do!) but for health reasons.

I do believe such treatments as what you recommend also have many other benefits. I have skin cancer stage 2, and I am using a number of natural treatments at the moment. It seems to be keeping things at bay, as the skin cancer has not gotten worse at this point.

But I want to continue to add in more natural remedies for the overall health of my skin and not just on the face. I plan on trying your recipes and treatments for other areas to see if it reinvigorates the skin and helps protect it from further cancer damage.

I love these recipes by the way! Truly I am looking forward to trying them all. Maybe overmedicating a bit, but at this point, I would rather be doing too much than not enough. Likely I will go with one or two at a time to see what the impact may be as if I do them all at once, I will not be able to determine which may work better. Thanks for the great and useful article!

    1. Hello Dave.

Thanks for visiting my website, despite the fact that acne scars may not bother you.

However, you say that you’ll not be able to impress anybody at your age. Well, the way I see it, you’re a fighter. You do what-the-heck-ever you can to curb your cancer symptoms. That is extremely impressive!

I cannot say whether these remedies will help you with your skin. I really hope they can. It’s never wrong to strive for a healther overall skin, and natural remedies are definitely a good choice for doing so.

Hopefully you’ll see some improvement, and if you do, please pop back in and post your results!

Thanks for visiting and good luck with testing these recipes!

  14. Hi, I a few months ago I was looking  for pimple resolution but I couldn’t find the exact cure. I’ve just read your content there are so much info. It’s really interesting to me I would like to try it and will suggest it to someone, I hope it will work for his skin.

Q how did you find all these info about skin care? And have you got any proven result ?

Thank you for sharing your post I will try it.

    1. Hey Nazir

Thanks for your kind words. Your friend is very welcome to pop in and have a read!

Regarding your question, I read a lot of health blogs and studies. I’ve come to realize that there is so much out there to learn about acne and remedies, so I actually sort of made a “rolodex” of all the blogs to read frequently. Maybe I’ll make a post about it sometime.

I have tried most remedies and one that worked the best for me (everybody’s skin is different, so others may work better for you) was the lemon. It bleached my scars, but I had to keep doing it for a few weeks. Unfortunately, it irritated my skin, so I had to stop.

If you do decide to try the lemon, don’t forget to moisturize after every treatment. It’s very effective at drying your skin, unfortunately.

Thanks for visiting and have a nice day!

  15. Hi,I have read the whole review about this information. This is most important for us.Most of the people have to face this unbearable Pimple problem.I believe this information is very helpful for them.To remove Pimple marks fast use lemon juice.Remember that our skin is to sensitive. Baking soda, lemon, tomato, honey and aloe vera etc are most important for remove this problem. But lemon juice has natural skin bleaching and can help to effectively lighten our acne scars. Thanks for sharing this article.

    1. Hello!

I agree. Lemon has been the most effective treatment for me, but the others are also packed with health benefits and nutrients for your skin.

Moisturize after using lemon though. Your skin will get dry!

      Thanks for popping in!

  16. I personally have been suffering with combination skin and blemishes most of my life. Thank you for enlightening me of a cheap and effective way to cure my issues. I will for sure, utilize this recipes.

    Spectacular article, Mike! Well done!

    1. Hey Paul, and thank you!

Combination skin is quite complex and may require several types of treatment depending on the area you want to treat. A quality moisturizer to top off your treatment is definitely recommended, to restore the balance in your skin’s oil production.

Keep me posted on how your treatment turns out!

  17. Hey Mike. Too bad I didn’t get to know this earlier on, if I had i think my skin would be a lot better. Anyways I didn’t really know that Aloe Vera can also help remove the dark spots, is have lots of it at my place just that it tastes too bad I gave up on it after I tried it a few times.

I’m certainly going to try out the lemon method and hopefully I can get rid of the few spots. Hey, is it true also that pimples can just come as a result of age and those ones are natural? Like at the between 14 and 25. Thanks for sharing this

    1. Hey Donny!

It’s never too late to have a healthy skin. Start giving your skin attention today and you’ll look back on this day a year from now and thank yourself.

Aloe vera works with very varying results, unfortunately. It’s a plant with a wide range of health benefits, no doubt, but more research has to be done before the effect against acne can be concluded.

The lemon is a better bet, but make sure to hydrate your skin. Use a good moisturizer and your skin will be a happy camper!

Pimples always appear for an underlying reason. Sometimes it’s hormones, other times it may be clogged pores or dry skin. It’s very different from person to person.

The main reason you get acne in your teens is because your body produces so much growth hormones that your skin is going completely bonkers. It’s definitely natural!

Thanks for the visit, and have a super day!

  18. Great article! There is so much on here for me to implement into my skin care routine at least once a week. I must say that I am an avid user of aloe vera for everything relating to skin care. However, I have never tried recipe 3: Aloe Vera & Lemon Juice Cream. I am going to try it this weekend and let you know my results. Thank you so much for this informative article.

    1. Hello Nia,

      Thanks for those kind words.

How’s your overall experience with aloe vera. Does it work? What does it do for your skin?

I’m eager to see those results of yours! Talk soon!

  19. This is a great article! Thank you so much for sharing this information and these different recipes. I never knew there were so many home remedies for acne. Acne can be such a difficult problem to deal with – especially when you’re younger. I know some people who deal with acne and scaring. I will definitely share this information with them.

Thanks again, for this great information.

    Best regards,

    1. Hi Yvette!

Acne can be hell when you’re younger, no doubt. Not only do you have to worry about your own face, but also what other kids think about you. And I know how mean kids can be sometimes, haha.
